Napoli have contacted former Newcastle manager, Rafa Benitez, in a bid to replace underperforming Gennaro Gattuso according to Italian paper, Corriere dello Sport.
Napoli have lost their last two games in all competitions in costly circumstances. Those loses against Juventus and Hellas Verona have seen them lose the Super Cup and drop out of European places in the league table; although if they win their game in hand against Juventus, they will go up to 3rd.
With the possibility of missing out on Champions League football for the second straight season, Napoli president De Laurentiis, have had preliminary talks with the very pragmatic Rafa Benitez, who just stepped down from his managerial role at Chinese side, Dalian Professional.
It is purported that Napoli’s performance in tomorrow’s cup game against Spezia tomorrow will decide where the pendulum will swing.
Benitez previously managed The Azzurris between 2013-2015 winning the Super Cup and Italian Cup before moving to Madrid.
If fired this will appear a harsh decision as Gattuso has steered the helms of Napoli in lengthy periods without first team players like Mertens, Insigne and especially record signing, Victor Osimhen, who is expected to feature from start tomorrow.
