Henry Onyekuru was voted Man of The Match in Galatasaray’s 2-1 win over Gaziantep FK after scoring twice.
The 23-year-old had started on the bench on his third return to the Turkish giant following a loan move from Monaco during the week.
He came on at halftime with the scoreline goalless but completely changed the complexion of the game.
He showed the spark that saw Galatasaray shell out half a million pounds to sign him on loan, when he received Ryan Babel’s pace and maintained his composure to give Cimbom the lead just 6 minutes after the break.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but after a lengthy VAR review it was deemed legal. He doubled his side’s advantage in the 78th minute after a clever disguise pass from Muhammad Akturkoglu sent him one on one with the goalkeeper, reacting quickly to poke home.
He was lively again one minute later, after a Galatasaray counter attack saw them in a 2 on 1 situation. Onyekuru unselfishly found Babel, whose weak shot failed to trouble the Gaziantep goalie.
Gaziantep halved the deficit in the 96th minute of extratime via the penalty spot but it turned out a mere consolation as Galatasaray took all three points in a vital 2-1 away win.
The win moved Galatasaray to 2nd spot, two points behind leaders Besiktas who have a game in hand. They also extended their win to three on the bounce as they seek their first title since Onyekuru’s first loan spell with them in 2018.
