Nigerian forward, Henry Onyekuru, featured for Galatasaray as they defeated leaders Fenerbahce 1-0, usurping them to the top of the table.
The 23-year-old was playing just his third game since his return to the club and endured his first barren spell having scored 3 goals in his first two games.
The match was overly feisty as 35 fouls were committed, but it required a moment of brilliance from Mostafa Mohammed whose well-placed shot beat Fenerbahce’s goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir.
Before that Onyekuru had a chance to open the scoring from a difficult angle, but he snapped his shot after getting quickly closed down.
The games biggest highlight was the introduction of former Arsenal and Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil for the first time since his January move, and he appeared to have made a dream debut when his deft free-kick was headed home by Ozan Tufan, but the goal was controversially ruled out for offside following a late VAR check.
Onyekuru was withdrawn in the 78th minute as Galatasaray looked to see out the lead, while Bright Osayi-Samuel lasted the full 90, with his biggest moment coming when he tested Muslera following a fine run in the second half.
Onyekuru has now won back to back games against Fenerbahce for Galatasaray who had not won at their rival’s ground in the 20 years prior to 2020. He is also yet to lose against the Yellow Canaries in four games
The win saw Galatasaray move top of the table, ahead of their rivals on goal difference, as they look to win the title for the first time since 2019, which was Onyekuru’s debut season for them.
