Nigerian goalie, Maduka Okoye has impressed local media after giving an interview in the Dutch language after just 6 months of stay in the Netherlands.
The 21-year-old moved from Fortuna Dusseldorf to Sparta Rotterdam in July 2020 on a free transfer, the first time leaving Germany, his country of birth.
It has been an upward trajectory for him since then, has he has displaced first-choice goalkeeper, Benjamin van Leer, and kept 3 clean sheets in 9 games while his competition had never kept one in his Sparta career.
Statistics by Wyscout ranked him as the most efficient goalkeeper in the Eredivisie.
He surprised Sparta TV in an interview, by choosing to speak in Dutch after just 6 months in the country and had to explain his success,
“Yes, it was a little difficult. Dutch is a mix of English and German. I can now speak Dutch a little well.”
He also cited teammates as positive influences,
“I speak English with most of my teammates, but I try to speak Dutch with some of them. Tommie Beugelsdijk is my Dutch teacher in the dressing room.”
On his side’s performances so far this campaign:
“We are doing very well. We are playing good matches and grabbing important points.”
Okoye’s Sparta visit free-scoring Fortuna Sittard later this evening at 20:00, a match the shot stopper agrees could prove a banana skin as their opponents have scored the 2nd most amount of goals by sides not in the top 6.
“I expect a difficult match, but we have the quality to take Fortuna.”
