Napoli manager, Gennaro Gattuso, is strongly pondering the possibility of handing Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, his first start since his return from injury in the second leg of the Coppa Italia showdown against Napoli, according La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 22-year-old has been gradually eased into games since his recovery from a shoulder injury as the manager looks to avoid a relapse and boost his fitness.
Aside his injury, Osimhen was also gravely ill, having contracted the deadly Covid-19 at the end of 2020 following a visit to Nigeria.
He has accumulated a combined total of 90 minutes in the 4 games since his return, with his longest stay coming in Napoli’s 2-1 away loss to Genoa where Osimhen came of the bench for the last 36 minutes .
Osimhen featured for 8 minutes in the first leg against Atalanta at the Diego Maradona stadium which ended in a goalless stalemate and has been touted to get a start as Napoli struggle with notable absentees in Mertens and Koulibaly.
Gattuso job also stands on the line as he is reported to be facing a sack if the Azzurris fail to impress in their next two games.
The Coppa Italia clash takes place tomorrow evening at 20:45 hrs WAT.
